Abigale always liked to swim.

They were always first in the water on days when the tide was right and the weather perfect, and they were often the only one so much as getting their feet wet on days when it wasn't. They could swim farther out to sea without losing their nerve than anyone else, fearlessly letting the waves carry them so far out they almost couldn't be seen, before effortlessly making their way back. They dove deeper than anyone else as well, and seemed to be able to just hold their breath for longer and sink down faster, yet still rose to the surface easily too.

Sometimes people in the village (usually children) would ask Gale how they could stand being underwater so much, wasn't it scary, weren't there creatures in there. Their reply would come with an easy smile, reassuring the child hesitant to touch the waves at all that it wasn't as daunting as it seemed, and there were creatures but they weren't scary if you knew how to treat them right. And Gale knew how to treat them right, and would tell you if you asked. Some of the creatures they spoke about hadn't been recorded by anyone before - if they'd cared, Gale could have been credited as the first to discover several new species.

In short, Gale was practically born for the ocean. It almost seemed as though something in the depths had recognized them as one of its own and had told the entire pantheon of fearsome creatures beneath the waves to treat them with respect. They knew the ocean well, and were never scared by its moods or denizens, but at the same time they seemed to never be overwhelmed or overpowered by its might, instead slipping through the water like it was their second home.

Which is why it was so shocking to us all when they drowned.
